Sotiris Tachiatis
Born in Corfu, he is a distinguished contemporary cellist of international acclaim, with a significant contribution to the Greek Symphony field. He started playing cello at the age of eight in the “Old” Philharmonic of his birth town (with Pavlos Brandis and Federico Camillieri). He subsequently studied at the Musical High School of Athens, where he graduated with a diploma. He continued studying at the Athens Conservatory, with interruptions due to the turbulence of the times (1942-1957), and was awarded with a unanimous First Prize Diploma (student of L. Kouroukli).
He joined the Athens State Orchestra and the National Opera Orchestra in 1950. In 1970 he was the principal cellist (“first chair”) in both Symphony Ensembles, while in the Athens State Orchestra he had already been appointed first principal from 1968 (his position was made permanent in the Athens State Orchestra in 1955 before retiring on 29.6.1981).
As a solo cellist he has played regularly in almost all Concerts of Classical Repertoire, with the Athens State Orchestra; the National Opera Orchestra; the Symphony Orchestra of Greek Radio & Television (ERT); the Orchestra of Colours; the Symphony Orchestras of Budapest and Miskolc, Hungary; the Symphony Orchestra of the Philippines (Manila), etc. He has regularly appeared as a solo cellist in recitals in Athens, other Greek cities, and abroad (West Germany, Switzerland, Cyprus, Hungary, the Philippines, etc.) and has regularly collaborated with numerous chamber music ensembles (in September 1991 in a small tour of Germany).
These ensembles include: the Chamber Orchestra and String Quartet of V. Kolassis; the “Greek Quartet”; the Trios: “Apostolidis-Tachiatis-Garoufalis”, “Politis-Tachiatis-Kydoniatis”, “Spyros and Chara Tombra-Tachiatis”, “Greek String Trio” and the “Duo Attico” with V. Christofilou. He has collaborated with the Greek Television and the Television of Cyprus (RIK). He is a member of the “International Symphony Orchestra” of New York, with which he toured the United States in 1972.
He has mastered the classical cello repertoire to a high degree, but has also specialised in the execution of contemporary compositions, especially the most demanding and pioneering works. His memorable execution of Nikos Mamagakis’ “Monologue” for solo cello (Athens, “Kentrikon”, December 1962) afforded its composer the 2nd Prize in the Panhellenic Composition
Competition “ATI-Hatzidakis”, and its performer the unanimous recognition of his skill in another field.
He has made recordings for cello and piano (under the German label “Garnet-Schallplatten”), accompanied by the pianist P. Nousia (Sonatas: op. 69 of L.v. Beethoven, op. 36 of E. Grieg and op. 40 of L. Boellmann).
He has received glowing reviews from critics, such as: Giorgos Leotsakos, Lily Drakou, Phoebus Anogianakis, Katy Romanou, Alexandra Lalaouni, Giorgos Vokos, et.al.
He is currently professor of cello and chamber music at the Attiko Conservatory (since 1984) and for a number of years (since 1958) has taught at the National Conservatory. His students include: S. Athanasoulas, C. Argiropoulos, G. Pavlidis, Or. Zafiropoulos, Ir. Kavassis, et.al. He is father and instructor to St.-I. Tachiatis.
In December 1962 he was honoured by the Patriarch of Alexandria Christoforos II with the Medal “True Cross of St. Mark the Apostle and Evangelist”.
