Woodwind Instruments
The wind instruments are made from either wood or brass.
The woodwind instruments originated from reeds and empty bones, into which our ancestors blew in order to create sound. They are essentially made of tubes of a varying length with orifices in their lateral sides. Even thought the adjective “wood” is a direct reference to the material these instruments are made of, today they are commonly made from other materials (e.g. metal) as well.
Woodwind instruments include the flute, the oboe, the clarinet, the fagotto, and also the piccolo, the English horn, the bass clarinet and the contra faggoto. All these instruments, collectively, cover the range of the piano sounds.
The brass wind instruments are tubes with the necessary mouthpiece on one end and a cone on the other. The tube of each of these instruments differs in diameter, length and form.
In brass wind instruments sound is produced with variations in the pressure of the lips of the player on the mouthpiece. The sound quality of every organ depends mainly on the type of mouthpiece used.
Brass instruments are: the trumpet, the horn, the trombone, the tuba and the saxophone.
The saxophone, although made from brass, is classified as a woodwind instrument.
