Saxophone

The saxophone is a brass wind instrument which nevertheless belongs to the woodwind family due to the fact that its sound is produced by a reed. It has a single-reed mouthpiece, a conical tube and a key mechanism.

The first saxophone was made by the watch-maker Defantenel in Lizie; however its true inventor, who gave his name to the instrument, is the Belgian Adolph Sax, who was a clarinettist (1840).

There are seven types of saxophone: the sopranino, the soprano, the alto, the tenor, the baritone, the bass and the contrabass. It is used in military bands and Jazz orchestras, and in other types of music such as Reggae.

The saxophone was recognised by the State as a classical instrument in 2007 and affords its students with a Certificate and a Diploma. Duration of tuition is 8-13 years.

The classes, specifically, are as follows:
  • Elementary (1-2 years)
  • Lower (2-3 year)
  • Intermediate (2-3 years)
  • Advanced (3-5)
