Contrabass
The contrabass, also known as double bass, is a string instrument played with a bow. It has a length of 1.8m and contains has four chords, as the other string instruments of a symphonic orchestra. Originally the contrabass contained three chords, while today five-stringed instruments can also be found. Of all the members of the strings family the contraband exhibits the larger size and the deepest sound. Its lower part is supported on the ground by a metal rod.
In older times it was used only to fortify the bass melodic line of a piece, together with the violoncello.
As a solo instrument it was first used by Mozart, as by Schubert and Stravinsky.
The length of the strings and the large space between the chords make it difficult for the player to produce up-tempo melodies, unlike the rest of the strings.
The contrabass is also a fundamental instrument in Jazz music, where it is usually played with the fingers.
The study of the contrabass is recognised by the State and affords its students a Certificate and Diploma. Duration of tuition is 7 years for the Certificate and 9 years for the Diploma, if a Certificate is previously obtained.
The classes, specifically, are as follows:
