Modern Piano
The modern piano, acoustic or electrical, is a complete, integrated instrument which operates either as a solo instrument or as part of a modern band with a complex but simultaneously analytic manner, providing the harmonic structure of every theme (either in its basic form or via chord replacements in other relative cycles), and also the rhythmic context of each work and the melodic phraseology with an impressive propensity for improvisation.
It is clear from the above that a modern pianist has at his or her disposal a widely varied knowledge base and range of possibilities, as the piano can often replace a whole band; and thus its playing is considered a complete orchestration.
Besides the knowledge and the opportunity of immediate practical application of the theory and harmony (in its classical and modern form), elements of orchestration are demanded by its study, together with the complete familiarisation with the administration of the musical temporal values.
Contrary to what is popularly believed the theme of improvisation, of utmost importance, is not something which “develops in time”. Undeniably, the experience time offers can contribute to a great extent, but improvisation in its basis and as a mentality can be taught in every case. It is definitely one of the most interesting parts of the whole study cycle.
Studies in modern piano are classified into 8 annual levels, completion of which lead to the complete learning of the instrument and mastering of its theoretical and technical demands:
